Annex 5: Analysis of the Results of the Questionnaires

The questionnaires were aimed:

  • to gauge how knowledgeable participants were at the start of the event on the eFORESEE project and on the concept of what constitutes Foresight;
  • to understand what expectations the participants had from the project and if these could be realized;
  • to identify what areas or themes within Knowledge Futures in ICT and Education Pilot the participants were interested in;
  • to discover in what capacity the participants were interested to participate within the Pilot;
  • to gauge how much the participants had understood from the presentations regarding the concept of Foresight and the eFORESEE project itself.

Of the 46 participants, 40 completed both questionnaires. The remaining 6 did not complete the post-workshop questionnaire. Participants were asked to maintain anonymity by putting down only their birth date for identification purposes.

The results from the Pre-Workshop Questionnaire replies indicated that:

  • Participants at the Pre-Launch were representative of different sectors covering the academia, public and private companies.
  • The majority of participants already had a general idea of the project after having attended the Breakfast Meeting on eFORESEE organized by the Malta Council for Science & Technology on 13th February 2002, where an introduction on eFORESEE was delivered and/or read up material that has been made accessible from the Project's website. Very few participants had no knowledge on the project.
  • Perceptions with regards to the benefits to be expected from the project mainly comprised of networking from a business perspective and the attainment of knowledge management skills and experience in strategic planning.
  • It was felt by the majority of the respondents that discussions would be affected by the fear to disclose proprietary data.

The results from the Post-Workshop Questionnaire replies indicated that:

  • The majority of the respondents understood the content of the eFORESEE project and the aims of the Pilot. In fact out of 40 respondents 35 expressed their wish to participate in the project, whereas the remaining 5 respondents felt that there were no concrete examples delivered during the presentations with regards to tangibles that would emerge from the project and therefore were still hesitant as to whether they wanted to participate in the Pilot.
  • From the quantitative aspect, in terms of indicating in what capacity respondents were interested in participating in the pilot, the following results emerged:
      Expert = 9
      Champion = 5
      Participant = 19
      Technical Secretary = 2
  • Themes or Areas proposed by respondents for the Knowledge Futures in ICT and Education Pilot are:
    • Diplomacy
    • eLearning
    • Distance Learning
    • Enterprise Governance
    • Curriculum Update and Development
    • Knowledge Management
    • Institutional Memory
    • Marketing Intelligence
    • Business Opportunity Niches
    • Technology Mapping
    • Culture Change
    • Persons with Disability
    • The Old
    • Children
    • Women & Science
    • Netweaving
    • Training
    • Bridging Business Units and Education Institutions
    • Human Resources Skills Development for New Economy
  • The themes/areas proposed by respondents indicate the type of benefits participants are looking for in this Pilot. Most respondents also expressed the fact that in the near future they would like to see foresight exercises being introduced to various sectors in Malta bringing about more strategic planning and a culture change, which benefits would be felt at a national level.

    In conclusion, it is evident that this event was successful as 76% of attendants, expressed their keen interest in participating in the eFORESEE project. This analysis is part of the Stakeholder Mapping exercise and will be followed up accordingly in preparation for the first Pilot to be launched in Malta in June 2002.
