Towards enhancing the Marine sector's contribution to the Maltese Economy in 2020

Definition of Objectives

The Core Objective:

1. To elaborate a forward look on how Malta could optimize the sustainable exploitation of its marine resources through emerging science and technology, in order to meet the needs of an evolving knowledge-driven society and a vibrant and diversified economy projected in 2020, and underpinning the essential management and development strategies to secure delivery.
    
   The exercise will entail:
    
2. A quantified assessment of the relevance of the current and future diverse range of economic activities related to the marine sector and the projected impact of S&T on the economic development of this sector;
    
3. Proposals for a more effective role for research, technological development and innovation to address the needs and potential of the marine sector;
    
4. Identify the needs for the sustained and routine monitoring of the coastal seas to support a knowledge-based management and use of marine resources as well as to provide a base for improved marine services and applications;
    
5. Pointers towards securing public understanding of, and commitment to, the role of the marine sector in national economic development;
    
6. Exploring public - private partnerships and industry - academia linkages to achieve critical mass, maximize opportunities and exploit synergies;
    
7. Proposals for a National Marine S&T Policy Strategy (to identify the policy approaches and research investments that need to be made).
